As many of us who live through or study the effects of workplace bullying are aware, a common malady for the target is lack of sleep. While occasional lack of sleep can be frustrating, continuing episodes of insomnia can be very detrimental to health and well-being. This is not only true for the sufferer, but also for those around him/her as well.
If someone is being targeted by a bully, the effects of sleep loss can cause almost a merry-go-round effect. This bully is already trying to make the person look and feel incompetent. Now the health-harming effects of something like insomnia start to take a foothold in the target’s life. Areas affected include, but are not limited to, task performance and ability to concentrate while on the job. Deficits in these areas (or more) only add fuel to the fire that the bully has set. Insomnia is making what the bully says about the target come true – they start to feel like the inept buffoon the bully says they are.
Don’t just take my word for it – here is a very good, short article about what can become of someone who is sleep deprived.
